“I may have more work to do, but I have a swimming pool”

University of Glamorgan student, Cerys Traylor, decided to uproot her life for the second year of her journalism degree, and move to Florida to experience university and culture in another country. And although she may have more work to do, she still has a pool to relax in.

Her decision came after many months of speculating whether to stay in Wales for her second year or move to Florida, where she would be much happier studying and having a fresh start as ‘life in Cardiff was becoming monotonous’ she says, and that ‘Toy Mic Trev and the Rasta Bin man could only keep me entertained for so long.’

(Toy Mic Trevor is a street entertainer. He performs on Cardiff’s Queen Street, using an Echo-brand toy microphone entertaining all that watch whereas Rasta Bin man plays the bins with drumsticks – Cardiff eh?)

The university of North Carolina and The University of Missouri were also options to choose from, but like any fashion conscious girl, Florida was the only option for Cerys, and she feels she has done the right thing in having an exchange year there. She says “The Americans I have spoken to have told me that coming here to study is a good choice and to enjoy it as much as I can.”

She told me that the difference between here and there is that there are huge amounts of work to do after each class, and the professors often do pop quizzes and class participations, which all contribute towards your final grade.

And with 3 days a week in University, starting at 9.40am until 2pm, Cerys seems to have a lot of time on her hands but procrastinating isn’t an option, which is a shame as Cerys loves to do anything other than work!

But according to the 19 year old, without a car you cannot travel around as much, and since the university is not close to her apartment, she has to catch a bus to get to her campus or even to go shopping, which is a hassle for her.

Cerys stayed in Ty Pont Haearn last year, which is just across the road from the university and a 10 minute walk into the city centre. So everything was within walking distance for the Atrium student.

But in the apartment Cerys is currently living in, it plays host to a swimming pool, 24 hour gym and an on-site fast food court, but she says ‘it ain’t Ty Pont quality that’s for sure.’ Sarcasm here Cerys? but it seems that the 19 year has everything on the edges of her fingertips at her apartment being in proximity of pool parties and take-aways.

Although she isn’t staying in America for her third year as she has planned to, Cerys does hope to start working for the UFS Oracle, in December, which is a student university paper which produces 5000 copies daily. Since she can expose her journalistic skills to the editors and have her work printed, it is a step closer to showing the university how great a writer she is, and with over 40,000 students on campus, they can see how British students report on matters.

Cerys doesn’t have a blog for her experiences in Florida, but she has set up a health and beauty blog which she says covers stuff that she would eventually like to write about in magazines. And since she has attracted a number of followers on her blog, she has been contracted by a PR firm who want her to create reviews after using their products – which she gets to keep!

The link to her blog is http://cococerys.blogspot.com/ and is very much a recommended blog to read through.

Cerys is due back at Christmas to spend a few weeks at home with her family and friends, and I know she will definitely abuse the fact that she can spend her money in Primark and New Look before jetting back off to the old U.S.A. for another half a year to experience everything Florida has to offer.
